Norma De Haarte
Norma De Haarte was born in Georgetown, Guyana, July 28, 1933. She graduated from Guyana's Teachers' College in 1966 and attended Brandon University in Manitoba, graduating in 1977 with a Bachelor's degree in teaching. She returned to Guyana and worked with the Ministry of Education as a guidance officer. In 1982, she returned to Canada. She is a teacher with the Etobicoke Board and is the mother of five, grandmother of eight.

The Union was begun because, in the early 70s, writers had no way of comparing experiences. But the results have been much greater than expected: Public Lending Right, benefits for the institutional copying of our work through Access Copyright, informed contract advice, a network to draw upon, and a collective voice. All writers in Canada have benefited -- not only those who have joined the Union and pay their dues.
