Ontario Writers-In-the-Schools Program Overview
Funding has now been allocated for the 2016-17 fiscal year. Applications for readings taking place after April 1, 2017 will be available in January 2017.
Please remember that applications must be received at least 4 weeks prior to the date of the visit.
This program is open to all TWUC members who fall within the eligibility requirements and guidelines as provided by the Ontario Arts Council.
The Writers’ Union of Canada funds author visits to Ontario elementary and secondary schools and subsidizes a portion of the author's fee. Applications must be submitted by the host school.
We cannot recommend specific authors for your school. Please refer to members' pages or search the Writers-in-the-Schools search engine at http://www.writersunion.ca/participating-authors for information on authors and their fees.
A half day is one or two sessions. A full day is three or four sessions.
Each author sets his or her own reading fee rates: a minimum of $300 for a full day and $200 for a half day. The Union pays a portion of the reading fee directly to the author, $150 for a full day and $100 for a half day.
Example: if an author charges $500 for a two-session, half-day visit, TWUC will pay the author $100 directly, and the school is responsible for paying the remaining $400 to the author directly on the day of the visit. The fee is to be confirmed between the school and the author in advance of the visit.
The Writers' Union of Canada reimburses the author's travel and accommodation expenses up to $125 for a half-day visit and up to $250 for a full-day visit. The host organization is responsible for paying for additional travel and accommodation expenses.
