Brian Burtch completed his B.A. (Sociology) at Queen's University, his M.A. (Criminology) at the University of Toronto, and his Ph.D. (Sociology) at the University of British Columbia. A full professor in the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University, he is an associate member in the Department of Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies at SFU, and adjunct faculty in Justice Studies at the University of Regina.
Brian was BC/Yukon Regional Representative for The Writers' Union of Canada [TWUC] from 1999-2001 and a Float on TWUC National Council from 2001-2002. A North Vancouver resident, he is married to Carol Hird and has a daughter, Leora Burtch. Brian is active in online and distance education initiatives at SFU. His interests include photography, hiking, postsecondary program assessment, slo-pitch, skating and - at last! - hockey. He is a member of the North Shore Family Court & Youth Justice Committee and serves on the BC Book Prizes Board.
