Joan Barfoot was born and raised in Owen Sound, Ontario. She graduated with a B.A. in English from the University of Western Ontario in 1969. She is a former reporter and editor for various newspapers including: The Owen Sound Sun-Times, The Windsor Star, The Toronto Sun, and The London Free Press.
