I’ll never forget the letter from Pierre Berton urging me to join the Writers Union. I remember the giddy feeling of being taken for someone who might actually belong to the same club as Berton, Frye, Findley, Mitchell and Laurence. They’re all gone now, bless them, but TWUC soldiers on. Something grand, something beyond getting that first book published: a community, a career. A life.
