Rocks, Ridges, and Rivers – Why are Canada’s mountain parks so spectacular?

by Dale Leckie, Ph.D., P. Geol.

Award-winning geologist and best-selling author Dr. Dale Leckie guides you through the Canadian Rocky Mountain National Parks. Geology and geomorphology have created that amazing scenery in Banff, Yoho and Jasper National Parks.

The story of the Rockies, its rivers and valleys, glaciers and hot springs, caves and karst, mountain building and erosion unfolds. With eye-catching illustrations, art work, and photographs, this presentation blends story telling with science and natural beauty with easy to understand explanations.

Did you know … that the moon was once much closer to the earth, creating powerful tidal currents that deposited a kilometre of now hard, resistant sandstone, that forms the backbone of the Rockies. Mount Edith Cavell, Lake Louise and Athabasca Falls all owe their beauty to this half a billion-year old sediment.

Did you know … that mountain building in the Rocky Mountains is over, and those spectacular summits are wearing away. That is why the mountains look so spectacular. There has been up to 20 kilometres of sediment eroded from Yoho National Park, leaving amazing peaks and bringing the Burgess Shale fossils to the surface.

Dr. Dale Leckie, geologist and author of “Rocks, Ridges, and Rivers: Geological Wonders of Banff, Yoho and Jasper National Parks”, will regale you with snippets about the geological history of our Rocky Mountain Parks and makes them so spectacular to visit. Come learn about how the Rocky Mountains have come to be.
