Gordon Johnston was born in Port Arthur, now Thunder Bay, in 1947. He studied at Trinity College in Toronto and then at Harvard before starting a teaching career at Trent University in Peterborough that lasted forty years until he retired in 2011. He organized the university's Writers Reading Series for a number of years, and served for more than a decade on the Advisory Board of House of Anansi Press.
