Position summary:

The Membership & Engagement Coordinator will work with the Union’s staff to: grow the Union’s membership with a view to increasing and diversifying the Union’s membership; coordinate Union events including webinars and the BIPOC Writers Connect mentorship series; and manage the Union’s social media accounts. The ideal candidate will be a highly organized, process-oriented individual with a passion for community engagement and a dedication to ongoing equity work.

Location: During the COVID-19 pandemic, all Writers’ Union staff are working from home and have been provided with TWUC computers for home use. When public health guidelines indicate it is safe to return to work, staff will return to work at the Writers’ Union office in downtown Toronto. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Recruit new members with a view to increasing and diversifying the Union’s membership.
  • Administer and process membership applications.
  • Provide administrative assistance to the Membership Committee and Webinar Advisory Committee.
  • Coordinate and administer the Union’s events including twice monthly webinars and annual BIPOC Writers Connect within the available budget (during COVID-19 all events are virtual).
  • Complete grant applications and reports related to events or other TWUC programming in the Coordinator’s portfolio.
  • Promote TWUC programs and services to writers across Canada with an emphasis on Indigenous, Black, racialized, and other historically marginalized communities to maintain and strengthen TWUC relationships with these communities. The Membership & Engagement Coordinator works in cooperation with all of TWUC’s staff and volunteers to strategize equitable processes and principles for membership growth and retention.
  • Manage the Union’s social media accounts.
  • Track and report on outcomes of initiatives.
  • As with all TWUC staff positions, sustain and consistently establish equitable practices across the portfolio.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Excellent organizational, time management, and prioritization skills;
  • Strong project coordination skills;
  • Event planning experience;
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills;
  • Clear, strong, and persuasive written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Experience in developing constructive working relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with Indigeneity, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, disability, deafness, gender, sexual orientation, and/or other aspects of human diversity;
  • Experience in or familiarity with the publishing sector or larger arts community;
  • Excellent Microsoft office and Zoom (or similar platforms) skills;
  • Experience working with a CRM database; 
  • Professional social media experience would be an asset;
  • Experience with facilitation and/or equity work would also be an asset.

This is a full-time position. This position is not open to members of The Writers’ Union of Canada.

Salary Range: $39,000 – $44,000
