Seeking Submissions for the 2018 Dave Greber Freelance Writers Book and Magazine Awards for Social Justice Writing

The Dave Greber Freelance Writers Awards have been established to empower freelance social justice writers as they move toward final publication of a book or magazine article. The winners are announced on the website and their profiles updated as they move forward in their career.

Originally open only to Calgary writers, those from anywhere in Canada may now submit their work.

Awards are presented to a Canadian freelance writer who has a contract for publication of a non-fiction magazine article or book. Projects that delve into issues associated with social justice, whether in the Canadian context or globally are strongly encouraged. Further, the hope that is woven through the creation and continuation of these writing awards is always that people will expand their understanding of the world in which they live and may themselves in their own way become active advocates for change as was Dave Greber.

There are two separate awards. The book award is set at $5,000 and the magazine award is set at $2,000. Both awards are made available to freelance writers of non-fiction for social justice writing that is exceptionally written, well researched and demonstrates excellence of storytelling. The Book and Magazine awards are unique in that they are generally awarded before the writer completes a book or magazine project for publication.
