Update on COVID-19 & Economic Impact Form

We are living in extraordinarily challenging times. The safety of our members, volunteers, and staff continue to be our priority.

The Union is working to ensure we can continue to provide support and guidance to our members. We have been hosting numerous meetings with government, funding bodies, and sector partners to find ways to work together to support you in this difficult time, and we will keep working remotely on your behalf until it is safe to return to our desks.

Measuring the Economic Impact of COVID-19

As governments and funding bodies work to develop programs that will support Canada’s artists impacted by COVID-19, they are seeking information to help them understand the financial impact of the pandemic. To this end the Union has developed an online tool for measuring loss to writers.

Please complete this form to let us know about the financial loss you have experienced and anticipate experiencing from COVID-19: www.writersunion.ca/economic-impact-covid-19

We encourage you to list all income and potential income that has been disrupted or denied. This includes the loss of potential publications and all related income.

Updates from Funders and Government

As this is a continually changing situation, updates may happen on a daily basis. We encourage you to check the sites relevant to you often.

Emergency Funding for Writers

We would like to remind members of the Writers’ Trust’s Woodcock Fund which provides funding for writers who are facing an unexpected financial challenge while trying to complete a book. Get details here

Staying Connected

As most of us work from our home and seek opportunities to connect with our peers, please remember the Union’s private regional Facebook groups which provide ways for members to stay in contact during this time.

Writing provides a crucial sense of connection right now, so last week we launched an online campaign #ConnectWithABook. Join us in celebrating all the great Canadian books people are reading right now! Share TWUC’s tweet or Facebook post and add what you’re reading, then encourage your friends and family to participate by adding #ConnectWithABook to their social posts.

We know how important regional meetings are for maintaining a sense of community within the Union and with your writing colleagues. We are looking into options for online regional meetings that will allow members to connect digitally and, tech-capacity permitting, see each other’s faces.

We Are Here to Help You!

While staff work from home, we remain available to assist you. The best way to reach us is by email (get contact details here). We do hope you will understand that it may take us longer to reply to your emails and inquires as we try to manage our work from remote locations while balancing the numerous other challenges that are affecting all of us.

Thank You

Lastly, to those members who work in the many essential services (healthcare, emergency workers, grocery store employees, and many more) that continue to operate, we thank you for your extraordinary efforts during this time. As well, we thank all of you who are practicing physical distancing and working and living in self-isolation for helping to flatten the curve.

Stay well, and keep reading and writing.
