Application for Northern Ontario Writers-in-the-Schools

With the assistance of the Ontario Arts Council, The Writers’ Union of Canada funds author visits to northern Ontario elementary and secondary schools at little to no cost to the school. Under the Northern Ontario Writers-in-the-Schools program, the Union subsidizes an author’s reading fee and travel and accommodation expenses for a tour of three schools within the same region of northern Ontario.

Please ensure you have read the Northern Ontario Writers-in-the-Schools program information before applying. For more information, contact Office Administrator Valerie Laws at or 416-703-8982 ext. 224.

The deadline for submitting an application is January 15 of each year. All applicants will be notified of application results within 4 weeks of the deadline.

Please list alternate choices. Requests will automatically be placed under an alternate choice if you request an unavailable author.

As part of the Union’s Equity Implementation Plan, the Union prioritizes readings by authors who are Black, Indigenous, racialized, LGBTQI2S, or living with a disability.

*The author publicly self-identifies using one of these terms or a related term from the LGBTQI2S lexicon. **The author publicly self-identifies as living with a disability.

The Union strongly encourages hosts to hold readings in barrier-free spaces and to consider any additional presenter or audience needs.

If a three-school tour is not possible for some reason (e.g., due to the size or location of your school) or if a different visit configuration would serve your community more effectively, please explain and we will do our best to accommodate you.
