Bev Brenna’s new middle-grade novel Fox Magic, with spot illustrations by Miriam Körner, appears in September from Red Deer Press/Fitzhenry & Whiteside. This story in magic realism explores life from the perspective of twelve-year-old Chance Devlin. Two of her friends have committed suicide and as she struggles with her loss and guilt, she makes a connection to a mysterious red fox named Janet Johnson. This new bond helps her come to terms with the past and move forward. A book that will open honest discussion with family and friends, at home or in the classroom, supporting healthy choices and mental health. Fox Magic contains an Afterword by Dr. Tim Claypool (Ph.D., R.D. Psych) with resources on suicide prevention. Teachers’ Guide available at Bev is the author of a dozen books for young people and she teaches in the College of Education, University of Saskatchewan. Author royalties are dedicated to non-profit community groups and Canadian mental health organizations.
