Eva Tihanyi was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1956 and came to Canada when she was six. She grew up in Windsor, lived in Toronto from 1981 to 1989, and now divides her time between Port Dalhousie (St. Catharines), ON and Toronto. She has taught at Niagara College since 1989.

In 2006, Tihanyi received a Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing from the Humber College School of Writing for her first collection of short fiction.
