Solomon Hailemariam

Biography

Solomon Hailemariam is a writer, translator, journalist, academic and was the founder and president of PEN Ethiopia. Solomon has attended his higher education in Addis Ababa University, University of South Africa, The Venice Academy of Human Rights in Venice, Italy, and Åbo Akademi University in Finland, and the University of the Western Cape. Some of his notable works and short stories include: Love and Anxiety, The Search, The Priest and his Son, Once the Climax is Over, None of Your Business, The Sale and The Young Crusader. The latter won the first Burt Award for African Literature. Solomon’s recent short story, “None of Your Business” published in 2020 by Akashic Books, a publisher based in Brooklyn, New York, along with other short stories. ‘None of Your Business’ has been published by Die Horen (Schiller), German literary journal and broadcasted by German radio stations - SWR 2. His work: ‘The Priest and His Son’, ‘Once the Climax is Over’, and ‘The Search’ appeared on the ‘Anthology of the Best Literature’ series published in 2016,2017, and 2018 respectively. Solomon's work has appeared in many publications ranging from the Globe and Mail and Reader's Digest. Solomon has previously been a country Director of Panos Ethiopia and used to teach at the Addis Ababa University and New Generation University College. Some of his works have been translated to English, German, French and Swedish languages. Besides his regular creative writings, his current interests include: Political Culture in Ethiopia.  His articles on the current affairs of Ethiopian politics have been published in many Ethiopian websites and newspapers. Born in Ethiopia, he lives in Toronto with his wife,Shewaye Tesfaye Mengistu, and their two sons: Nattysub and Higbosub.
