The Writers’ Union of Canada welcomes membership applications from professionally published authors working in any genre.

After creating an account, applicants who have published a full-length book through a commercial or university press will be asked to complete the Simplified Application. All other applicants will complete the Extended Application, which awards points in a variety of categories.

Former members wishing to rejoin do not need to reapply. Please contact the Union at or 416-703-8982 to complete the rejoin process.

Every application must pass before the Union’s membership committee for approval. This process usually takes 2–4 weeks for Simplified Applications and 6–10 weeks for Extended Applications (though it may take longer in some cases). A delayed response from TWUC does not in any way reflect the quality of your application.

In order for your application to be processed, you must pay the membership application fee. The option to pay online will be provided when you are ready to submit the application. If your application is unsuccessful, you will be refunded the full fee.

Eligibility for membership is determined using a points system that recognizes professional publication in a variety of formats and commitment to craft. Review the points system hereTo qualify for membership, applicants must earn 6 points from the criteria listed in the points system, with at least 3 points earned in Section 1: Publishing Criteria Points.

Members must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada, and/or self-identify as an Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, Métis) person born or resident in Canada.
