Dana Church

I am a children’s author who loves writing about animals. I am such a nerd when it comes to animals that I have a PhD in animal cognition: the study of how animals think. I spent many years in university studying bumble bee behaviour and memory. I still love to watch bumble bees. They are amazing little creatures. I am also passionate about making science fun and accessible for both children and adults. My first book, The Beekeepers: How Humans Changed the World of Bumble Bees, was published by Scholastic Focus in March 2021. I have two upcoming books: one about monarch butterflies, also with Scholastic Focus, scheduled for Fall 2023; and one about how scientists study how animals think, with Orca Book Publishers, scheduled for Winter 2024.

Presentation Description

What is it like to study bumble bees? Did I ever get stung? Why do I like bees so much? What are bumble bees, anyway? During my presentation, I will answer these questions, share my experiences as a scientist, and talk about how people like you and me can help the bees. I will also share tidbits from my book, The Beekeepers: How Humans Changed the World of Bumble Bees, published by Scholastic Focus, and answer questions from the audience. Here is what some teachers are saying about me and my book:

“Our Gr. 5/6 class immensely enjoyed reading Dana Church's book, The Beekeepers. Students were thrilled when Dana joined our class in Google meets. My students loved hearing Dana share her passion for bees and ask questions about bees and her writing process. The Beekeepers book easily allows for cross-curricular activities in Language and Science.” – Libby Laythorpe, Teacher, Waterloo Region District School Board

“We were thrilled to host Dr. Dana Church as she presented her book ‘The Beekeepers’ to our junior grades. Dr. Church is passionate about her work and students joined in her excitement, asking thoughtful questions about bees, STEM research and authorship. I highly recommend Dr. Church and ‘The Beekeepers’ as an engaging, informative and interactive presentation for any school.” - Danielle Holden, Principal, Waterloo Region District School Board
