Biography

Janet Barkhouse is a poet and writer. Salt Fires, her debut book of poetry (Pottersfield Press, 2018) follows on two chapbooks, Silence (2015) and Sable Island Fieldnotes: poems by Janet Barkhouse, photographs by Zoe Lucas, which launched in 2017. Her publications for children include a chapter book of creative non-fiction, Sable Island – Imagine! (Toronto: Curriculum Plus, 2010), the text for Pit Pony: The Picture Book, (Halifax: Formac Publishing, 2012), and most recently Keeper of the Light (Formac Publishing, 2016), chosen as a Best Book of 2017 by the Canadian Children's Book Centre. Her literary fiction has been broadcast by CBC radio and published by Room. TNQ, Riddle Fence, CV2, LRC, Dalhousie Review, Nashwaak Review are among the journals that have published her poems.  2013-14, Barkhouse was an artist in residence (writing) at Dalhousie University Medical School with her daughter, singer-songwriter Alex Hickey, through their Humanities-HEALS program.
