Peter Quartermain

Photo: Meredith Quartermain 2006

Retired in 1999 from the English Department at UBC, where I taught contemporary poetry and poetics written in English. Am working on a memoir of childhood during the second world war in England, but this goes slowly since I am currently editing the collected poetry and plays of the American poet Robert Duncan, to be published in 2 volumes by the University of California Press. Have published numerous articles on poetry in acadmic journals, and since retirement have published poems in various magazines in Canada, the US, and Britain.

Since retirement I have devoted some time to watercolour painting, publishing poetry in handset letterpress under the imprint Keefer Street Press; I have also conducted writing workshops at the Summer Writing Program at Naropa University, and given talks and lectures at various institutions in Canada and the US...

With my wife Meredith Quartermain run Nomados Literary Publishers, in Vancouver, specialising in more-or-less experimental work (usually poetry, and frequently by little -known or new writers). Better-known writers whose work we have published include Robin Blaser, George Bowering, Nicole Brossard, Daphne Marlatt, Sharon Thesen, and Fred Wah among others. Currently we produce three chapbooks a year, and do not accept unsolicited mss.
