Lara Okihiro is thrilled to announce the publication of Obaasan's Boots, her children’s novel based on her family’s experience of internment as Japanese Canadians, and co-written with her cousin, Janis Bridger. The novel follows cousins Lou and Charlotte as they spend the day with their grandmother in the garden who shares with them how her community was forced apart during WWII: her family was uprooted, moved into camps, and their belongings stolen. Struggling with the injustice, even as they marvel at their grandmother’s strength, Lou and Charlotte begin to understand how their identities have been shaped by racism, and that history is not only about the past.
